Thoughts from a Newly Minted Blackberry Addict

by Cordelia

I believe the proper term for Blackberry addiction is “Crackberry,” but I’m really not so keen on that one. I have heard of these mystical smart phones for a while, like everyone else, but I always told myself I didn’t need one.  I probably didn’t. After all, what’s wrong with being tethered to your desk like some sort of email controlled slave because it’s the only way to stay on top of everything going on out in the world? Well, quite a bit is wrong with that, it would seem.  I never had any interest in one of these devices until my fiance started talking about wanting a Droid. I went online, read reviews, checked the specs.  What I found was I wasn’t really that impressed.  It didn’t sound any different from an iPhone, and I’ve already read about, researched, and dismissed the idea of getting one of those.  A month or so later, he changed his mind and got a Blackberry Bold. While researching other phone options, I would often come across comparisons to Blackberries, so I was familiar with their reputation, features, and apparent superior security features (much to the chagrin of several foreign governments).

So, what I discovered was that I wanted one, it seemed like it would make a lot of things easier. I need to send my resume to someone for a project management position, I can do it from my Blackberry no matter where I am. I want to tweet about how awful the book signing I attended was – the author was a bore don’t waste your money on the book – I can do it from my blackberry. Suddenly, I was finding few reasons not to get one, and more and more reasons that this would make my life so much easier. And it has, I can even get coupons for the grocery store from an app while in the store, save them to my store shopping card, and they are automatically deducted when I check out – how awesome is that? There are lots of useful apps like that, and I’m finding the process of finding them to be both educational and amusing.

Do I think everyone needs a Blackberry? No, my mother wouldn’t have the slightest clue what to do with one, and my kids certainly don’t need them. Ray seems content to download video podcasts about wild animals and camping gadgets, but it doesn’t really seem to do anything for his productivity. If, however, you need to be able to manage things while you’re out, well, managing other things, then this might just be the greatest invention ever.

I guess that’s all for now.

P.S. I still love you Nookie (that’s what I call my Nook), even though I have new gadgets to play with.
